Wool & Cashmere Care Guide
Preserve the beauty, softness, and longevity of your knitwear.
Cherishing Natural Fibres
At House of Glenmore, our pieces are crafted from the finest natural fibres, recycled wool, lambswool, and cashmere. These materials are naturally resilient, breathable, and self-refreshing. With a little care, they will remain beautifully soft and wearable for years to come.
Washing and Refreshing
Natural fibres don’t need frequent washing. Wool and cashmere naturally repel odours and release moisture, so often, a gentle airing is all they need. Simply lay your knit flat or hang it in a well-ventilated space away from direct sunlight for a few hours.
When washing is required:
- Hand wash only in cold or lukewarm water (30°C or below).
- Use a specialist wool or cashmere detergent, regular detergents can be too harsh.
- Gently swirl your item without rubbing, twisting, or stretching.
- Rinse thoroughly in clean, cool water until all soap is gone.
Drying
- Never wring or hang when wet, it may distort the shape.
- Instead, roll your garment in a clean towel to absorb excess moisture.
- Lay it flat on a dry towel or drying rack, reshaping while damp.
- Avoid direct heat sources such as radiators or sunlight.
Ironing and Steaming
If needed, steam lightly to remove creases and restore softness.
- Always iron or steam on the reverse side with a low heat setting.
- A gentle steam can help fluff up fibres and maintain their natural texture.
Pilling (Bobbles)
Pilling is a natural characteristic of soft fibres and should not be seen as a flaw. The tiny balls of fibre form where friction occurs (under arms, sleeves, or bag straps).
- Simply remove them gently using a cashmere comb or fabric shaver.
- Over time, your garment will shed fewer fibres and become smoother with wear.
Storing Your Knitwear
Wool and cashmere need to breathe, never store them in plastic.
- Fold garments neatly and store them flat in a cool, dry place.
- Use breathable cotton bags or drawers lined with tissue paper.
- For long-term storage, especially over summer, add natural moth repellents such as cedarwood or lavender sachets.
Refreshing Between Seasons
Before storing for the season, ensure your knitwear is clean and completely dry. Natural fibres can attract moths if stored with traces of body oils, perfumes, or food. Clean them gently, allow them to air dry, and then store with care until the next cold day calls for them again.
Sustainability Through Care
Caring for your garments is a small act of sustainability. By extending the life of your wool and cashmere, you reduce waste, conserve resources, and honour the craftsmanship that went into making each piece.
Each item from House of Glenmore is made to be loved, repaired, and passed down, a timeless piece of Scottish luxury designed to last a lifetime.
